Qiao Yulong was already interested in drawing before he arrived at the studio. Faced with motoric challenges, it was six months before he learnt to create line drawings based on the Chinese national flag.

Water colour was his preferred medium during his first two months at the studio, although he was hesitant to fully commit himself to its use. He subsequently began drawing in small spaces in a sketchbook, which turned out to be the ideal medium. Yulong always carries a portable speaker with him, so that he can listen to music while he draws. If people ask him why he listens to music, he beats his chest and cries ‘Strong!’ Yulong has now completed his own handwritten catalogue of work. Each of his works is described in detail: not only the title and date of completion, but also an explanation of the subject – all written in minute, precise Chinese characters.
